In a bizarre sequence of things in a shocking turn of events, the Carolina Panthers are dropping Baker Mayfield . Ian Rapoport broke the news on Monday that Carolina had announced the release of Mayfield, who was the previous No. 1 overall pick, presumably considering the future of the team’s performance during their off this week. Mayfield is set to go through the waiver wire and the team that takes Mayfield will be owed only $4.25 million, as per Pro Football Talk. It’s not a great deal considering that he was owed upwards of $15 million in the course of the season. That is a good buy-low option for the final month or two in the regular season. But, the sudden departure of Mayfield is a bit odd and it’s possible that teams will hold off on signing his services until they look deeper into the reason Carolina has decided to cut the player out with just six games left.
