Prince Paul Reunites With De La Soul After 30 Years, Teases New Music For 2023

Prince Paul has come back together along with De La Soul after more than 30 years and it appears that they’re preparing to release a new album in the same vein.

The renowned producer was previously been at the recording studio together with his New York trio back in August. In August, when Musicdope90s asked to Paul to ask for his thoughts Paul simply replied: “I’ve been sworn to secrecy.” De La member Maseo was similarly cryptic and offered nothing more than a few GIFs.

In the latest post posted on his Instagram, Prince Paul expressed joy over having reunited with the group. He stated that the reunion was overdue.

“This might have been one of the most eventful years I’ve had in quite some time,” He wrote. “An unanticipated highlight was the chance to create De La Soul once again. I want to express my gratitude to the people who believed in me again to get the task done…I would like to thank everyone involved in making this project possible. Everyone I contacted for help or advice from.”

Prince Paul produced three of De La Soul’s best-loved albums including 1989’s 3 Feet High and Rising and the album from 1991, De La Soul Is Dead, and 1993’s Buhloone Mindstate. However, for their fourth album which was released in 1996’s Stakes is High The group chose to produce the majority of the album with assistance from J Dilla, Spearhead X, and Skeff Anslem among others.

Interview by Musicdope90s in 2012 Paul was asked about his relationships with the group and stated that the decision to break up in advance of Stakes Are High was the best thing for his relationship.

I was conscious that we’d be better at peace separately than together, and I did not want to lose friends, so that is a reference to us having to part ways, Paul explained. Our friendship has always been enjoyable. No matter what the past held for technology or the music business, which, in hindsight, was nothing. And everything other than that, everything was to help them grow in their own way as people.”

De La Soul most recently released and The Anonymous None… , in 2016 featured Talking Heads’ David Byrne, Little Dragon, 2 Chainz, Snoop Dogg, Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn, Estelle, Usher, and many more. The album reached the number. 12, on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Rap Album category at the ceremony in 2017.

In the same year, after years of combating Tommy Boy Records for their legendary catalogof albums, De La Soul officially obtained the rights back to album masters like 1989’s 3 Feet High & Rising and 1991’s De La Soul Is Dead.

The move came shortly following the group pleaded with fans to not stream any of their initial six albums because of their ongoing battle with their previous record label regarding ownership of the master recording.

Should De La Soul are indeed planning to release an album due in 2023 this will be their first release since 2016’s The anonymous Then There Was Nobody…
