Tyler, The Creator’s ‘Of IGOR’ Inspired Stormzy’s New Album ‘this Is What I Mean

Tyler The Creator’s note written by him accompanying the album’s IGOR provided the inspiration for Stormzy‘s latest album, It’s What I Mean.

Although he would rather let his music speak for him the Merky rapper decided to take his cue from Tyler’s book to write an accompanying note to the announcement of his latest album, which debuted on the streaming platforms the following Thursday (November 25,).

“When Tyler, The Creator released his masterpiece, the IGOR, and posted a message on the album and I wanted to share the same message, however I was wary. Primarily because I’d love the music I make to be the one to talk about it however I decided to send this message anyway.” the singer began.

“I am afraid that I share too much often, which can make me feel vulnerable sometimes. However, I do it so that you can get to know my thoughts a little better and also to provide the music I create an understanding of… It is my hope that you hope you enjoy the album in a relaxed and honest heart and, if you are not happy with it , I’ll tell God I’m content with that. I’m grateful that you took the time to listen with openness.”

The album by Stormzy “This is The Way I Mean features 12 guest-free tracks, including the brutal introduction “Fire + Ice” finding the singer reflecting on his split with Maya Jama which he described as “death” in the past.

Tyler released the first single from his IGOR album on May of 2019 and Tyler wrote a letter to fans just hours prior to the release date explaining that the project wasn’t like anything he’s done before in his works and it was not a pure rap album as well.

“Don’t enter this album expecting an album of rap. Don’t enter this expecting anything else. Simply go and dive into it. I think the first time you listen is the best. Listen through the entire length without skipping,” he wrote.

IGO was awarded Best Rap Album honors at the 2020 Grammy Awards. The latest album Call Me If You’re Lost that he produced together with DJ Drama, also received the award for Best Rap Album in this year’s Grammy Awards.

In the meantime, Freddie Gibbs has hinted that he might have an idea of a collaboration on the horizon together with Tyler, The Creator whom he has called fearless as well as “amazing.”

Gibbs was asked about the possibility of collaborating in a recent episode The Rap Caviar podcast. He replied that Tyler, The Creator have talked about the idea in the past.

“We can do it Tyler,” Freddie Gibbs said in his voice, saying his name repeatedly. “I’mma call his mommy and get it done. She’ll convince him to take it on.”
