Kendrick Lamar Takes Talking Of Oscar Hope For “We Cry Together” Short Film: ‘I Wanted To Bring The Drama’

Kendrick Lamar has Oscar hopes for the short film he wrote to promote his song with the same title, We Cry Together.

As we approach the window for voting in 2023 for the Academy Awards next month, Kendrick and his manager Dave Free spoke with Variety about the idea and the idea behind the idea. In the video posted on the following Monday (November 28, 2018), k.dot explained how the idea was intended to reflect the world at large and not only his personal experience.

“So in my writing, I ask myself”Okay, how do make this feel more personal and also hold the mirror up as a concept that is shared by all and not just an individual idea” he explained. “I wanted to create that tension because ultimately, regardless of whether we’re happy or not, both the positive and negative, and the ugly as well as there are pros and cons what makes everything change.”

The short film is written and directed by Free, Kendrick and Jack Schreir and also features actress Taylour Paige along with TDE’s ex- TDE rapper.

“It made me want to take a step back from what I was writing and truly be present and share the experience with Taylour (Paige),” Kendrick added. “And I’ll always remember the two of us going back and forth and feeling like, wow I get the character more since I’m trying to evoke the energy of it and the passion of it, because it’s alive and it’s real.”

Free stated that they would like to bring in some topics that aren’t typically discussed in the group, and to ensure that the settings of the room to match.

“When we began our project Kendrick told me the way he wanted the space to feel thick and for the space to be extremely,” he said. “He was looking to tackle issues that our culture, and as a species are hesitant to speak from.”

“Ultimately the most important issue is that people are people we can identify with,” Kendrick added. “Not just from our own culture as well as from other cultures across the globe. The environment is a major factor and this is something we wanted to incorporate as well as the script. It was as crucial as the people who were in reality spouting insults.”

Six minutes in length and released on the 1st of September the film has met the criteria to be considered for an award in the Best Live Action Short category at the forthcoming Academy Awards. Oscar shortlists are voted down between December 12 and 15 and the 10 films to be nominated for voting will be announced on the 21st of December. The complete list of nominees will be announced on January 24.
