James Cameron Says Success of Avatar Sequels Will Determine Whether Fourth and Fifth Films Happen

Thirteen years after the original film took the box-office to a roar, James Cameron is once trying to recreate movie magic in the long-anticipated sequel Avatar: The Way of Water. This world called Pandora is expected to have four sequels following The Way of Water, however, in a discussion by Total Film magazine, Cameron has raised some questions about the future of the film.
The director says that, according to him the box commercial popularity in The Way of Water and the untitled Avatar 3 will decide if the fourth or fifth films are made.
In an interview with The Total Film, Cameron remarked, “The market may be telling us we’re done in three months, or we might be semi-done, meaning: ‘OK, let’s complete the tale within movie three, and not go on forever.
Since its release in 2009 the initial Avatar film has been hailed as the largest film ever to make it on the screen. The recent theatrical re-release of the film in autumn brought in more than fifteen million dollars within the U.S. and more than 40 million globally, which brings the box office totals for the film by more than $2.9 billion globally.
Even after I authored this material, the world has changed, according to Cameron. “It’s the pandemic and streaming combined into one. We could go the other way and remind people why attending to the theater is so important. Definitely, the movie will accomplish the latter. How many people will care right now, is the question.
Cameron has been extremely vague regarding what the next chapter will be for Avatar beyond the third movie. In present, Avatar: The Way of Water is scheduled to be released on December 16th, and a fourth film is currently in the works for 2024 as a release. Cameron directed the third film simultaneously to The Way of Water and is currently slated to direct the film.
There are a few elements I pulled from [The Way Of Water] that I intend to work into movie three, according to Cameron. “These movies are outrageously pricey. Before the epidemic, there wasn’t much of a business basis for making a movie this expensive. We simply have to wait and watch how it plays out at this time. But for now, I can say that we’re putting on a three-hour experience that is essentially insane.”
After the third film is out it’s unclear about what the future holds for the franchise in the absence of Cameron in charge.
