Broncos’ Russell Wilson: “No Animosity” with Mike Purcell After Heated Exchange

Russell Wilson, Denver Broncos’ star, downplayed the importance of what seemed to have been a heated moment with Mike Purcell.

After a loss to the Carolina Panthers, Wilson said that Purcell and he are “on the exact same page” and that there is no animosity.

Purcell and the Broncos’ defense were leaving the field after a Panthers field goal when Wilson approached him and became very animated. Wilson explained that it was the Broncos’ nose tackle and said, “gotta find go.”

Purcell also addressed the matter. Purcell stated that he was frustrated with the situation and wanted to help the offense. The team was trailing by 20-3.

The postgame comments made by Purcell and Wilson offer a plausible explanation. When a team is losing its eighth game, emotions can boil over. Purcell might have simply been trying to lighten the fire under Wilson and his sputtering offense.

However, for those who were watching, it was an event that had a greater significance.

Denver might be able to trade Wilson for a five-year extension worth $ 242.6 million and give him a contract for five more years. However, this year has been a complete failure.

The nine-time Pro Bowler was poised to set new career records in passer rating (83.3), completion percentage (59.5) and QBR (32.6) by Sunday’s end, per Pro Football Reference.

The defense’s efforts are being wasted because Wilson is so bad. Through 10 games, the Broncos allowed the third-fewest yards (292.1) and second most points (17.1) respectively. Football Outsiders placed them fifth in defensive efficiency.

What does the defense have for all this? A record of 3-8.

It would be unfair to blame Wilson only, but Wilson is supposed to be the franchise quarterback that lifts Denver up.

The 33-year-old might not be following his lead. Tyler Polumbus, an ex-offensive lineman, reported that Wilson was not always in agreement with Nathaniel Hackett regarding the offense’s play-calling and philosophy. Polumbus said that the signal-caller also uses “audibles from Seahawks” as well as “using codewords that men don’t know.”

Wilson’s huge contract means that the Broncos will be tied to Wilson for the rest of their lives. Both sides wish they could speed forward to the offseason so that they can start fresh.
