How Allen Hughes Addressed Beatdown From Tupac Shakur In New Docuseries About The Rapper’s Life

A new documentary about the life and impact of Tupac Shakur will air on small-screen media. Allen Hughes, the director of Menace II Society, is this time using his perspective to tell the tale. When Tupac was still alive, their relationship was complicated. In the series, he discusses in great detail how he and Tupac came to be in such a difficult situation rather than ignoring it.
Tupac Shakur and Allen Hughes had a major fallout that turned physical
When Hughes and his brother/business partner hired Tupac for a role in their first significant film, Menace II Society, they did so as friends. According to reports, the rapper was let go for causing a disturbance on site. Tupac was furious at the firing, and things deteriorated to the point where he and his group attacked Hughes.
On Yo! MTV Raps, Tupac actually acknowledged to Ed Lover that he and his boys had jumped Hughes over the dismissal. They let me go, but they did it in a sneaky, punk snitch way. Therefore, I chased them down in the streets and spanked their behinds. The rapper claimed in the interview, “I was a threat to the Hughes Brothers, and it ain’t over.
Tupac refused to stop talking about the incident despite Lover’s efforts to stop him by warning that the admission might be used against him in court. The rapper was found guilty of assault thanks to the Hughes Brothers‘ use of the MTV tape in court. Due to the beating, Tupac was sentenced to 15 days in prison.
Allen Hughes includes their fallout in his new project
Hughes continued to support and be a fan of Tupac despite the incident. So much so that he will soon release a five-part docuseries about Tupac. In the beginning, he was reluctant to commit to the idea. Even more challenging was talking about the beating.
Because I thought, “I don’t want the camera on me,” I was hesitant to do my thing. I’m not trying to gain notoriety for this. “You gotta deal with it, Allen,” stated my producers and writing partner. So, we discovered a solution, Hughes told Deadline. “And it was cathartic for me because I realized facts about what happened that I had never comprehended before—things that actually support him and refute my case. Not the justification for violence, but the issue at hand.
In hindsight, he accepts that things turned out the way they did and doesn’t have resentment toward Tupac. “Until I began doing like a deep, emotional dive and excavation on this, what I didn’t comprehend was that “Oh s–t, the actual argument that we had about the character in the movie, he actually had a valid point.” I just didn’t see it. Then we’d gotten into too much of a dysfunctional place,” Hughes explained.
What Allen Hughes’ new Tupac project entails
Tupac’s family desired that he serve as project director. In spite of their turbulent history, he said during a panel discussion at the 2022 ESSENCE Music Festival that “to know him [Tupac] is to love him.”
He chose to use his mother’s perspective on her son in order to tackle the subject in a unique way compared to other Tupac-related documentaries. Hughes continued, “Anyone who knows Tupac knows that he and his mother are like twins. Tupac’s activism, no matter how it may be viewed, is a direct attribute from Afeni.
Hughes remarked, “And she recognized that this is an endless conflict.” He also calls the rapper’s mother “an real Black woman,” who gave Tupac the idea for songs like “Dear Mama” and “Keep Ya Head Up,” which honor Black women. Hughes continued, “I don’t know of an artist now that has two of those tunes.
