A Brief History of Queen Elizabeth II’s Life

Elizabeth II – Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; 21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022. She was Queen of the United Kingdom from 6 February 1952 until her death in 2022. Her reign of 70 years and 214 days was longest of any British monarch and the second longest recorded of any monarch of a sovereign state. At the time of her death, Elizabeth was also Queen of fourteen Commonwealth kingdoms other than Great Britain.
Elizabeth was born in Mayfair, London, the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth). Her father ascended the throne in 1936 following the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII, making Elizabeth the heir apparent. She was privately educated at home and began performing public service during World War II, serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. In November 1947, she married Philip Mountbatten, a former prince of Greece and Denmark, and their marriage lasted 73 years until his death in April 2021. They had four. children: Charles III; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.

When her father died in February 1952, Elizabeth – then 25 years old – became queen of seven independent Commonwealth countries: Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and Ceylon (today known as Sri Lanka), as well as the Head of the Commonwealth. Elizabeth reigned as a constitutional monarch through major political changes such as the Troubles in Northern Ireland, the secession in Great Britain, the decolonization of Africa, and the UK’s accession to the Commonwealth. She trained to be a driver and mechanic, drove a military truck and progressed to the rank of low-ranking Commander. Currently, she is “the only living head of state to have worn a military uniform during World War II”.
Her passing on September 8, 2022 is a great loss to the country, having lost the queen who ruled the country after 7 decades.
