Suns And Mercury Owner Robert Sarver Suspended By Nba For One Year, Fined $10 Million

After a long-running investigation into allegations of workplace misconduct, the NBA announced Tuesday that Robert Sarver, Phoenix Suns owner and Mercury owner, was suspended for one year and will be fined $10 million.

After a November 2021 article by ESPN’s Baxter Holmes that featured interviews with more 70 Suns employees, the league began an investigation into Sarver. These interviews revealed a history involving allegedly “racially insensitive” language and “misogynistic behavior.”

The league office released a statement stating that the investigation found three important findings.

  • During his tenure with Suns/Mercury, Sarver repeated the N-word at least five times when recounting statements made by others.
  • Sarver was inequitable in her conduct towards female employees. She made many comments about sex in the workplace, made inappropriate comments regarding the physical appearance of women employees, and engaged in inappropriate physical behavior toward male employees on multiple occasions.
  • Sarver used demeaning and harsh treatment to employees, cursing and yelling at them.
