Blue Jays’ Kevin Gausman Rips Umpire For ‘premeditated’ Balk Call

Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Kevin Gausman was still upset with the second base umpire Jeff Nelson after the first game of Monday’s doubleheader with the Baltimore Orioles. Baltimore Orioles and believes the balk call he received from the umpire was “premeditated.”
The incident took place during the 4th inning after Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman made it to first base with a single to the center field. Gausman who is conscious of the fact that he bounces his foot when he walks on the mound was cited for a balk when the pitcher delivered his first pitch for right fielder Anthony Santander.
An angered Gausman was confined from the shortstop Bo Bichette, and interim manager John Schneider took to the field to discuss the problem with Nelson.
“Just the fact that there’s no warning given, first chance a guy gets on first, you’re going to call something like that,” Gausman said to reporters following the game. “I was aware prior to the game that I had to be a little more conscious about (bouncing my feet) and I felt that I stopped the ball. If you take a look at replays it shows that I stopped. It was just that I thought that Jeff was, for some reason decided to call the pitch and entered the game knowing that he was going to call that pitch. This is unfortunate.
“Obviously, I was pretty heated. Bo kinda saved me and did a good job of reminding me like, ‘Hey, we’ve got two games today. It’s not just one game,’ so I really needed to stay in the game.”
