The Music For House Of The Dragon Will Keep “the DNA” Of Game Of Thrones

Game of Thrones featured several iconic tunes including”The Opening Theme” up to “The Rains Of Castamere” to “Light of the Seven.” Composer Ramin Djawadi wrote the entire show and is set to return back to Westeros in the sequel series House of the Dragon which will premiere on August 21 at 8 p.m. on HBO as well as HBO Max.

There is no one who has watched the first titles of the show yet; we’ll discover the title of the show on Sunday. But, Djawadi assures us that there’ll be a sonic connection between the show’s predecessor and the new one. “[W]e determined to preserve the DNA to keep the spirit of House of the Dragon from the original series,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “We will hear the themes we are familiar with from the original show, but since the characters are all new and this takes place 200 years prior to the original show, there’s a lot of brand new material that I’ve written as well as a variety of new themes we’ll listen to.”

In the same way that I stylistically compose the show, I’m hoping people hear it and think, “Okay, I feel familiar. The show is back. Westeros.” This was always the intention.

However, House of the Dragon isn’t an exact copy of Game of Thrones. One reason is that it’s mostly about the Targaryens as single-family Targaryens instead of being spread across multiple. This means that we’ll hear a number of songs that are reminiscent of those that were played whenever Daenerys Targaryen was at her thing, though there’s lots of new music as well. “That was the basis,” Djawadi said. “But since we’re dealing with House-specific characters, I wanted to ensure that there are plenty of new ideas for various characters as well as the many intricate storylines that we’ve seen in Game of Thrones. I wanted to tie these two stories in a similar way.”
