The 8 Best Dogs in Superhero Comics for National Dog Day

It’s National Dog Day, which offers dog lovers all over the world the opportunity to show their appreciation for their furry friends. As many comic book fans will recognize that there are a lot of canines in superhero comics that merit to be celebrated.

If they’re fully-fledged heroes, super-powered sidekicks or simply moral support for a certain hero, they’ve proved themselves to be a charming and unique addition to the comics.

To celebrate today’s holiday and the upcoming holiday, we decided to highlight some of the best dogs in the world of comics featuring superheroes. Follow the next slide for our picks (in not in any particular order).

1. Ms. Lion

To kick things off, we have Ms. Lion A cute pooch who has long-standing connections to the world of Spider Man/Peter Parker.

Ms. Lion first made her debut in the 80s of the Spider-Man cartoon series during the episode ‘Triumph Of The Green Goblin.’ In the original version the show, she was the property of Angelica Jones/Firestar and she proved to be an adorable friend for Angelia, Peter, and Bobby Drake/Iceman.

Following sporadic appearances in comics and appearances on the comic strip, Ms. Lion was introduced in 2009 as an adult male dog that was owned by Peter’s aunt May. Then, he became an original part of the Pet Avengers, despite having no unique powers or abilities.

Although there were many Spider-Man films however, the fans have not yet seen any version of Ms. Lion live-action. However, with the addition of another Pet Avengers member (who we’ll discuss in a moment) getting his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut very shortly, it’s not impossible to imagine that Ms. Lion could appear in the coming Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel.

2. Krypto

Another white-haired dog in the world of comic book superheroes is the name of a dog named Krypto the Super Dog.

Krypto began his story as a character in Adventure Comics #210 in the form of a long-term companion of Superman/Kal-El. He has had a number of comics over the decades, but has remained an integral part in DC Comics universe.

Outside of comics Krypto was a number of appearances on animated television and film shows. He even starred in the personal Krypto the Superdog animated series in 2005, and introduced the world to the dogs that are part of DC Comics.

Krypto has not yet appeared in live-action television, aside from one brief appearance in Smallville. However, with both DCEU as well as the Arrowverse having Superfamily properties of their own, Krypto would certainly be an enjoyable inclusion.

3. Lucky

The lovably referred to as “Pizza Dog”Pizza Dog,” Lucky is certainly among the top hilarious dogs that exist in the Marvel Comics universe.

Clint Barton/Hawkeye saved Lucky from mobsters during the initial issue of Matt Fraction and David Aja’s Hawkeye series. Lucky quickly became friends to Clint as well as Kate Bishop/Hawkeye becoming a favorite character of fans throughout the process. Since then, he has moved from Los Angeles, as part of Kate Bishop’s own Hawkeye series.

Lucky even got attention in Hawkeye Vol. 4, issue 11 The entire issue was being told from his point of his point of. Although the idea caused some trepidation within the comic world however, the issue quickly became loved, and was awarded this year’s Eisner Award for Best Single Issue.

As Ms. Lion, Lucky has yet to make an appearance as a character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, considering Hawkeye (played by Jeremy Renner) rumored to undergo some of his advancement within Avengers 3, 4 and 5 perhaps adopting a particular pizza-loving dog could be a part of it?

4. Ace the Bat-Hound

Although Batman may have a wide range of connections, not one can compare to Ace Batman, the Bat-Hound.

German Shepherd German Shepherd was first introduced in the year 1955’s Batman issue #92 and was inspired directly from Krypto’s fame. After assisting to assist the Dark Knight in a series of comics and appearances, he was put in the background until 1991. The latest Ace Ace was introduced during the DC Rebirth era, as the former dog guardian to The Joker and later taken in by Alfred Pennyworth.

Ace has been seen throughout all over the DC animated universe including Batman Beyond and the previously mentioned Krypto the Superdog. Though he’s yet make an appearance as a live-action character, there’s many avenues to make an appearance, whether within the DCEU or the Fox’s Batman Prequel show Gotham.

5. Dogpool

If you’ve always wished that Deadpool was a little more cozy and cuddly, then Dogpool is the perfect choice for you.

Mutated mutts have some of the same abilities as The Marvel Comics antihero, and even shares the name with Wilson. In contrast to the Earth-616’s Wade Wilson, Dogpool gained his powers via the results of a series of tests in a lab that was not entirely reliable for makeup.

Dogpool first made an appearance as a character in Deadpool Corps #3 in which he won the hearts of readers across the world – as well as Wade Wilson himself. The comic’s final issue was a sad one. Dogpool took his own life during 2013, during the Deadpool kills Deadpool Deadpool Kills Deadpool event however there’s lots to Marvel Comics precedent for him to come back from the dead in a comic to come out.

Regarding real-time, Dogpool did not appear in the last Deadpool Solo film. Although there’s no confirmation yet about whether Dogpool will be in the sequel, that is currently in production however, some strange things have occurred.

6. Rex The Wonder Dog Wonder Dog

Although DC Comics boasts many canines, none can compare to Rex the Wonder Dog. With his mystic abilities, along with extraordinary speed, strength and intelligence, Rex demonstrated his own level of superiority to many superheroes.

Three years prior to the Krypto’s debutin the series, Rex was first introduced in his own series on his own, The Adventures of Rex the Wonder Dog early in 1950s. Rex was largely absent from the canon until he appeared on the pages of Justice League of America in 1977. He was limited to intermittent appearances over the years following.

While Rex has been absent in the spotlight for a while but there’s no reason Rex shouldn’t be able to return in the present Rebirth storyline in some fashion. Perhaps he’ll be a guest on The CW’s time-traveling show Legends of Tomorrow.

7. Cosmo

Telepathic Soviet dog may sound strange in concept however, Cosmo has evolved into a beloved character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The space-loving dog first debuted with Nova Vol. 4. #7 in 2008 and has been given his own story and tales in the years since. He was an official of the security department on Knowhere, a planet. Knowhere and then later was an official part of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

In contrast to the other mentioned dogs, Cosmo has appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making his debut in the debut Guardians of the Galaxy film. A life-size animatronic version of Cosmo is also featured in the Disney’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout ride.

Lockjaw is scheduled to debut live action on the Marvel’s inhumans series that will premiere in the coming month. The dog has been considered one of the highlights of the series as evident in the marketing campaign for the show. ABC has even released an updated poster of Lockjaw earlier in the day to help Marvel fans all over the world to celebrate National Dog Day.
