The 15 Biggest Disappointments of the MLB Season so Far
The biggest MLB disappointments are different shapes and sizes.
There are rookies who have failed to live up to the hype, players making eight figures but providing below-replacement-level value. Preseason MVP candidates who have fallen out of the running for those honors, and others who simply haven’t been anywhere near as valuable (or available) as they were one season ago.
In all cases we’re left wondering how the situation could have turned out if the player who was disappointing had performed as anticipated in 2022.
Should the Chicago White Sox were getting some positive returns for the greater than five million dollars the team is giving Lance Lynn, Yasmani Grandal and Dallas Keuchel this season. Could they have a chance to run away from their American League Central?
If Nick Castellanos were hitting anywhere similar to the level he hit in 2021. And was being a Philadelphia Phillies’ designated hitter instead of playing right field in the place of Bryce Harper. Would be the Phils have a leg up on Atlanta Braves and the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves?
If Patrick Corbin weren’t having one of the worst seasons for an opening pitcher in history…well well. Maybe it’s possible that the Washington Nationals would still be awful. At least they’d feel at least a bit better about the amount they’re paying Corbin, wouldn’t they?
Patrick Corbin, LHP, Washington Nationals
With the $23.4 million paycheck, Patrick Corbin is the 10th highest-paid pitcher in the league this season.
He is still scuffling through what could be regarded in history as being among the worst 10 seasons of all time.
In his 18 starts, Corbin had a 5.70 ERA. It wasn’t great however, it was better than the previous year, which saw him allow a season-low 11 earned runs, and ends with a 5.82 ERA.
In the last month, However, Corbin has been a complete disaster, edging closer to historical levels of incompetence.
He’s allowed 26 earned runs over his final 15.2 innings, which equals a 14.94 ERA. He has twice failed to in the first inning. With the same numbers of 0.2 innings with 6 runs and 0 ER. Both against Los Angeles Dodgers and the Phillies.
He currently has a 7.02 ERA and a Baseball Reference WAR of negative-2.5.
If the season was to conclude in the present. Corbin would become the 21st pitcher in MLB history, the ninth since 1940. And one of the few ever since Colby Lewis in 2003 to complete at least 110 total innings, with an ERA of 7.00 or higher. On the “added” side, Corbin is one of only six pitchers from this era (aka from 1969 onwards) to have pitched at least 110 innings and have a bWAR that is negative-2.5 or less.
If you think that’s not enough The Nationals still have to pay Corbin $24.4 million the next season, and $35.4 million in 2024.
Nick Castellanos, RF, Philadelphia Phillies
Nick Castellanos had an excellent 2021 season for his team, the Cincinnati Reds, batting 309 with 34 home runs and 100 RBI – in only 138 games, none less. Even though he came into the 2021 season with an all-time OPS at 796. And no All-Star Games or MVP votes to his name The Phillies were betting big that Castellanos could repeat his feat and offered him the chance to sign a five-year, $100 million contract for free-agent.
The return on their investment has been horrendous.
For his part, Castellanos had a solid start to his. In his 30 games with the team, the catcher was batting 311 having hit five home runs as well as 13 extra-base hits. If he could keep that pace up. You could have seen him as an All-Star and fringe National League MVP candidate for the second straight season.
In 82 games played from May 11 to Aug. 12, Castellanos played .238 and hit five homers, 19, extra-base hits, and 4.6 strikes per walk.
And, worse, because Bryce Harper has been unable to throw a ball since mid-April The Phillies have been using Castellanos and his poor defense in left field on a daily basis. According to FanGraphs his score of negative-108.4 from the beginning of 2014. Of the 481 players who have been rated as qualified within the same timeframe. Just Nelson Cruz and Eric Hosmer have scored lower.
Due to that bad defensive line, Castellanos has been worth negative-0.5 BWAR. And is the last among qualified hitters, with negative-1.1 FANGraphs’ WAR.
The Chicago White Sox’ $18 Million Club
The value theoretically associated with one single win above replacement changes on an annual basis. But the standard guideline is that a person is worth somewhere between $5 million and $4 million for each WAR.
If the player is paid, for instance, suppose $18 million, for one season. They’re expected to have an average WAR of 3.6-4.5 range. Anything higher than 4.5 is a sign that the team isn’t getting bargains. Anything lower than 3.6 or less, and the team won’t be getting what they have paid for.
The White Sox opened this season with three players within that price bracket: Lance Lynn at $18.5 million, Yasmani Grandal at $18.3 million, and Dallas Keuchel at $18 million. With the three premium veterans, Chicago could have expected at the very least 11.0 WAR. They also would have preferred more than 13.7 WAR.
What it’s produced resulted in negative-3.0 bWAR.
(Factor that is positive-3.0 in bWAR) that Chicago received as a result of paying Jose Abreu $19.7 million and that’s it the White Sox spent a combined $74.5 million to get 0.0 wins over the replacement Ouch.)
Keuchel recorded a 7.88 ERA in eight starts before being assigned to be assigned. (He was worse than that during his subsequent appearances with The Arizona Diamondbacks.) Lynn was out for the initial two months of the season because of knee injuries and has a 5.88 ERA through 11 starts. However, Grandal may be the most disappointing of the bunch, with the slugging rate (264) that’s less than what he was within the previous season (520).
An unending series of injuries and controversial decisions made by the manager Tony La Russa have certainly been the cause of Chicago’s lackluster season. However, the fact it is the fact that White Sox has been robbed blind by these three players in the past is the main reason why this club has been a huge disappointment.
