Surging Jordan Montgomery tosses complete-game shutout for Cardinals

Albert Pujols hit career homer No. 693, Jordan Montgomery pitched a complete game and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Chicago Cubs 1-0 Monday to record their eighth consecutive victory.

Pujols opened the seventh with a drive to center for his seventh homer in 10 games. In his final big league season, he was a total of 14 overall. As the three-time NL MVP rounded out the bases with his second hit, there was a round of applause from 29,719.

The 42-year-old Pujols stated, “I believe at the end of it all you have to trust your work. And that’s something I do.” “I come out here no matter what I’m doing and continue my work for 22+ years.”

Pujols set a major league record for homering from his 449th pitcher, matching Barry Bonds. This was Pujols’ 940th multihit match, breaking a tie with Paul Waner to be 10th on his career list.

Smyly (5-7), called it a difficult way to lose, considering the pitch was far out of the strike zone.

Smyly stated, “I was thinking just adjust his eye level and like you know, don’t let him hit it obviously that was my thought.”

“But he’s The Machine for a reason. He’s back.”

Jordan Montgomery (7-3) only needed that one run. Jordan Montgomery, a left-hander, struck out seven batters and walked none in his first complete game of his career. He improved to 4-0 with a sparkling 0.35 ERA in just four starts since he was traded with the New York Yankees on Aug 2.

He said, “Every bullpen, I’m working with something and then when the ball is mine, I’m competing and trying to make pitches.”

Chicago’s only hit was scored by Christopher Morel, a rookie. He doubled with two runs in the third. Morel hustled to third after shortstop Paul DeJong mishandled Tyler O’Neill’s relay. The inning was ended when Nick Madrigal was retired by Jordan Montgomery after he grounded to DeJong.

Montgomery threw 99 pitches in the opener to a five-game series for the NL Central, with 65 strikes.

Oliver Marmol, Cardinals manager, said that it was a “pretty special outing”.

Chicago lost a strong performance by Smyly (5-7), in its second consecutive loss, after a five-game winning streak. In seven innings, the lefty allowed four runs, struck out six and walked two.

Manager David Ross stated that “He’s throwing it really well for us.” “That was an impressive performance by both starters.
