Goo Goo Dolls’ John Rzeznik recalls vocal cord scare: ‘Oh, my God. I have no other skills!’
After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Goo Goo Dolls have returned to the road. For John Rzeznik (lead singer and guitarist), it was more than just overcoming COVID-19 twice to return to live music venues and release the band’s new album, “Chaos in Bloom”.
Rzeznik, 56 recalls that in March, she had a nick on her vocal cord and tore a ligament in her elbow. “I had to remain silent for almost two weeks. “Oh, my God,” I am thinking. I don’t have any other skills. “I can’t get a job.
Rzeznik was unable to dust off his resume due to vocal rest, “massive doses” of Prednisone for his voice, physical therapy, and a platelet-rich plasma injection for his elbow. USA TODAY spoke to Rzeznik about returning to the road after a recent show at Holmdel in New Jersey.

Rzeznik was able to take time to reflect on his job as a musician, and the success of the Goo Goo Dolls. Rzeznik’s Grammy-nominated song, “Iris”, has also reached a significant milestone. He is now part of Spotify’s billion-streams club.
According to the Buffalo native, “You can kind of take it as a given.” “Our lives were disrupted… it was eye-opening to have it taken away.
“The hardest thing for me was feeling the loss in purpose. That’s what I believe a lot of people feel.”
He says that no matter how divided Americans may be, “we are all singing the same tune”,
The current tour began in July and ends with a show in Buffalo on September 24. e
Rzeznik states that “No matter how divided this nation seems, whenever they enter where we’re playing,” there’s one thing we all have in common. That’s a great place to begin. This is what I love about live music. “We’re all singing the same tune.”
They are singing a mixture of radio singles and songs from their new album.
John Rzeznik’s latest road plan includes virtual singing lessons
His life on the road is very different than previous years. However, the changes are not related to COVID. He was married in 2013, became sober in 2014, and became a father for the first time in 2016. His wife Melina, and his 5-year-old daughter Liliana were there with him at the Holmdel Show. It was about 30 miles from their Westfield home. Rzeznik’s day includes soundcheck, interviews, and a meet-and-greet with Eric Vetro. e
He says, “At the start of this tour it was a mental matter, because I was concerned about hurting (my) vocal cord again.” “So, I wasn’t going to go for it (vocally). He helped me a lot.”
He isn’t on the road and uses social media.
The band opens their show with “Yeah, I Like You,” its first single off the new album. It is about a musician being sucked into the “instant celebrity” world, which Rzeznik would prefer not to live in.
He reveals that he doesn’t use social media. “I create the impression that I’m doing it. I’ve just completely blown my cover.” He has a social media manager. “If I want to speak up, I’ll call or text him.”
“The anonymity afforded by social media allows people to be really jerks.” While you can hate my band, don’t speak about my friends and family.

In 2020, the band released their first Christmas album. Rzeznik was the producer for the entire album, “Chaos”. He hopes that the band’s growth doesn’t stop there.
Rzeznik states that “I don’t have enough things to do.” I still have songs in my head. I don’t want to be a nostalgic act. I still love to swing. That’s all you need.
