Dr. Dre Credits The D.O.C. For Convincing Him To Rap On ‘the Chronic’ Album With Snoop Dogg & More

Dr. Dre is credited to The D.O.C. for influencing him to sing for The Chronic, his multiplatinum album from 1992.
In an interview on an interviewer on the “Workout the Doubt” by Dolvett Quince, the Beats mogul spoke about how initially he didn’t intend on doing a rap on the album in any way. Evidently, plans changed, and he was able to lend his voice to classic singles like “Nuthin’ But A G Thang” and “Let Me Ride.”
“The D.O.C., my friend, talked me into to getting on the mic and actually doing that thing,” the man said. “Before this, I wasn’t going to be on the mic. I wanted to relax and make music that was the concept that led to the Chronic album My first solo album. It was what I wanted to accomplish.”
D.O.C. is often considered to be rap’s secret weapon even after the near-fatal accident which robbed him of his voice. The D.O.C. is responsible for writing a number of tracks with N.W.A, Eazy-E, and, of obviously, Dr. Dre. His solo debut 1989’s No One Can Do It Better was a top-ranked album, reaching the top of the pile at No. #1 on the top Hip R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart. The album was released shortly afterward the singer was struck by an unimaginable loss when he lost control over his vehicle and was involved in a horrific crash.
In the interview with HipHopDX in April in April, the West Coast gangsta rap legend talked about the life-changing event with his trademark grit and shared his story of how he nearly was able to avoid the incident when he was stopped at the time by Los Angeles police just before the accident, but they let the rapper go.
“The night of the accident, it was like a 24-hour period where I had tried both cocaine and ecstasy,” the man admitted. “And then it just quit working when I was driving home.”
When asked if he ever wished the police had taken him into jail, he said, “I did that for around 30 years. However, recently, I have realized that the officers were only part of that period. If they had sent me to prison, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Now, I’ve gained insights into a perspective that allows me to assist many others who are in the same area.”
Today, The D.O.C. always takes advantage of the opportunity to record along with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, as well. It’s possible that he won’t be able to perform raps as he did on “It’s Funky Enough” or “The Formula,” but He knows he’s got more important goals: “I found sort of a different purpose, and that purpose needs this voice.”
