25 Years Of Enter The Wu-Tang Sample (36 Chambers)
In 1993, Wu-Tang Clan made its debut with ‘Enter The Wu-Tang Sample (36 Chambers)’. The album was a sampling game-changer; borrowing from classic Soul & Jazz records as much as it did from 1970s Martial Arts films.
Almost 25 years later, ’36 Chambers’ remains one of the most significant albums of all time. Underpinned by a consistently raw & gritty aesthetic [owing partly to chief architect RZA’s lack of sophisticated equipment], it’s the samples that make the beats on the album so instantly familiar.
The expert, abstract story-telling of Ghostface, Method Man & co aside, 36 Chambers owes its success to its unique soundscapes; the formula for which is one part ’70s Martial Arts Film, one part sample from your parents’ record collection.
Hit play and get stuck into some of the most recognizable samples from artists as diverse as Thelonious Monk, LL Cool J, Otis Redding & The Jackson 5.
